Social-insurance Undergraduate Research (SURF) Fellows

SURF is a competitive, four-week, in-person program housed at UIC that will provide promising undergraduate students with an introduction to social insurance; the policies surrounding the social safety net; research investigating these, and their impact on economically vulnerable populations. Participants will receive a $3,000 stipend as a SURF Fellow.

The program will focus on learning about the history, policies, and economics of the social safety net through lectures, readings, group discussions, and presentations. Guest speakers working in policy-related careers will share cutting-edge research and career advice. Participants will develop career skills and receive mentored training on coding, data visualization, career development.

Following the four-week fellowship, SURF fellows will intern (virtually) with researchers currently funded to investigate these topics. This will be a brief opportunity (10-20 hours) for participants to gain hands-on experience in contributing to active research projects.
